Leather is a tried and true fabric that’s good in just about anything: clothes, shoes, bags, belts, gloves, wallets, and much more. But do you know how to make sure that these items stick around for the long haul?

#1: Keep It Dry

While leather has unique waterproof-like qualities, that doesn’t mean you can keep your leather wet. In fact, if you want to keep it looking sharp and avoid stains (or stiffness), then you need to dry off your leather items as quickly as you can. It’s by far the easiest and best way to get more life out of your items.
#2: Keep it Clean
This may be another common sense tip, but cleaner leather will last longer. The key here is to not overdo it though. For the most part, try to wipe off leather items you use with a damp cloth every other day. Then, use a leather cleaner once or twice a year to get rid of any tougher buildup. That’s all there is to it!
#3: Test Polishes Before Applying
Not all leather is the same, and not all polishes are a one-size-fits-all. You’ll most likely need to find a polish that matches up with your specific type of leather, and possibly even one that matches the color as well. Shop around before you apply!
Once you have your polish, don’t hop right in either. It’s always a good idea to test a small, inconspicuous area before you polish everything. Let the test spot dry for a day, and check it to see if you found a winner. It’s a bit tedious upfront, but once you find a good polish you can keep using it every time.
#4: Store it Properly
Now, what about the dryer?
While it may be tempting to keep your leather items in plain sight, you’re better off finding a secure storage place in your closet, wardrobe, or drawers. You need to make sure the area you choose is cool, free from humidity, out of the sunlight, and preferably dust-free. This will ensure that your items stay mold-free and keep their shape and shine.
#5: Get it Repaired Professionally
While leather is a wonderfully durable material, it’s also tricky to work with when it comes to putting it together (or back together!). That means when it comes time to repair a leather item, you may be better off skipping the DIY and hand it off to a professional. They’ll have all the tools, training, and tricks needed to breathe life back into your leather.
