Is There A “Best” Way To Fold Your Clothes?

Laundry can sometimes be a little more complicated than we like to think — and then other times, we make it too complicated on ourselves. The second is the case when it comes to folding your freshly cleaned clothes.

Proper folding has a couple of standout benefits — and it’s really easy to make sure you do it correctly. In this post, we’ll briefly look at those benefits, and then discuss some good, simple methods that help you make folding a breeze.

The Two Benefits of Properly Folded Clothes:

#1: It Saves Space

First of all, neatly folded clothes are going to save you a ton of space when you put everything in your drawers (or other organizers). Neat stacks of clothes mean you can see where you have space, stack accordingly, and then easily close everything up. Messing with wadded-up clothes that catch everything (and disguise any extra space!) can quickly create a huge headache.

#2: It Keeps Your Clothes Nice

This is the one your mother probably told you about the most — but it’s true! Jamming a bunch of unfolded clothes into an organizer will only leave them pressed up against each other in odd ways. The result will inevitably be wrinkles, meaning you have to iron before you wear anything. That’s a lot of time lost.

So… What’s the Best Way?

So, to the question we asked in the title: is there a best way?

Honestly, no. There are plenty of ways you can neatly fold the items in your wardrobe, and the ultimate choice is up to you on how you want to proceed. Some like the aesthetic of a particular technique, and that’s quite alright.

Still, we want to give you a simple way to fold your own clothes neatly the next time you do your laundry. Here’s a quick tutorial on the two biggest items you’ll need to fold:

Shirts

  • Layout the shirt on a flat surface
  • Fold both sleeves in so that your shirt has a rectangular shape
  • Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise
  • Fold it in half again lengthwise

Pants

  • Layout the shirt on a flat surface
  • Fold both sleeves in so that your shirt has a rectangular shape
  • Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise
  • Fold it in half again lengthwise

Everything else in your wardrobe should either follow a similar pattern to the two above, or should be hung up in your closet. And now you know the secrets to properly folded clothes!
