One of the biggest questions we get revolves around the idea that laundry detergents or fabric softeners can negatively impact your health. There are tons of blogs that claim the detergents used and sold by mainstream brands can hurt your skin or even cause severe reactions. This is simply untrue.
We want to take a moment to address the other side of this issue, and talk about why laundry is good for your health!
Laundry is Good for You
First of all, it goes without saying that laundry is good for mental and physical health. The freshness you feel from clean laundry is similar to the rejuvenation you experience when you deep-clean your house. This psychological “win” has been linked to positive mental health.
Similarly, clean clothes mean less contact with bacteria on a daily basis, which means your physical health is less susceptible to disease or viruses. It’s a win-win.
Detergents Are Made to Clean
The biggest claim, as previously stated, is that detergents can cause reactions to the skin — but this is untrue. The cleaning agents used by major brands in your laundry are tightly controlled to ensure that they have no negative impact on the human body.
Obviously, you shouldn’t consume it (and everything else the warning labels say!), but that’s typically not the issue anyway. The only potential irritant in a detergent has nothing to do with the cleaning agent itself. Some people may experience irritation from the perfumes and fragrances used in a detergent — and in these cases, you’ll likely know which fragrances affect you from previous experiences. However, it’s not out of the question that you may find yourself itching after a wash with a new detergent due to the fragrance.
Don’t Fear the Wash
All things considered, you should try to carefully vet your detergent to ensure that you don’t end up with a fragrance that irritates your senses. You’ll feel more comfortable after a wash, and you’ll rest assured that your health is in good hands.
